The CTH D Buffalo Lake Causeway Reconstruction Project in Marquette County was honored with a 2026 National APWA Project of the Year Award in the Transportation category for projects under $5 million. To overcome extremely poor soils, the team incorporated approximately 24,500 cubic yards of wood chips, or about 1,500 truckloads, as lightweight fill to stabilize the causeway. This innovative solution made it possible to construct a durable, long-lasting roadway where conventional materials would have failed, while also delivering a cost-effective and sustainable foundation. APWA Wisconsin honored KL Engineering with two 2026 APWA Wisconsin Project of the Year awards! CTH M Reconstruction Project in Dane County, WI won in the Transportation category for projects over $5 million and less than $25 million. This project transformed a congested and outdated two-lane corridor into a safer, more efficient four-lane divided roadway that improves mobility, reduces crashes, and enhances access for motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists. Delivered within a highly constrained environmental setting, the project balanced complex construction challenges with innovative, context-sensitive design solutions to create a resilient, multimodal transportation corridor for Dane County. KL Engineering was recognized with the 2026 WisDOT Excellence in Highway Design Award for Best Urban Project in the Consultant / Municipality category for the USH 14 (North Main Street) Reconstruction Project. The team transformed USH 14 through downtown Westby from a deteriorating, high-traffic highway into a safer, more connected urban corridor that better serves vehicles, freight, and pedestrians. Through innovative design, stakeholder collaboration, and strategic construction staging, the project improved intersection operations, enhanced pedestrian accessibility, and maintained vital access to downtown businesses. We are honored to announce that KL received a 2025 Excellence in Construction Award in the Small Structure category. The Pepin–Hager City STH 35 Retaining Wall Project in Pierce County was selected for this honor due to exceptional workmanship, strong quality control, and environmental protection measures implemented throughout the project.
